RESOURCES for LEADING MISSIONAL CHURCHES

Now there are varieties of gifts; but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

(1 Cor. 12:4-7).

In the midst of a secular culture, the church is called to demonstrate a different way to be a society - to demonstrate in its common life and shared ministry the qualities of life within the reign of god. While learning from secular disciplines, church leadership for church transformation calls for engagement with biblical and theological sources.

The following tested resources have been developed to help church leaders ground their ministry in the church's unique biblical calling.

Leading Missional Churches - Beyond the Inspiring Leader. A short essay, originally published in Transformation, considers three frameworks for church leadership: the inspiring leader, the instrumental leader and the institutional leader. $5.00
Effective Organization and Faithful Ministry. A short essay, originally published in Transformation, introduces a Systems Model of the Church as a resource for a diagnostic analysis of church organizational functioning. $2.50
Managing Clergy Transition. Describes the 7 stages and 34 essential tasks which clergy and churches must resolve if they are to manage a pastoral change successfully. $6.00
Organizational Concepts for Church Transformation. Introduces a theory of church administration emphasizing the church organization as a network of multiple overlapping work groups, linking functions, supportive relationships, and four distinctly different systems of church management. $10.00
Performance Evaluation: An Experience of Hell or a Taste of the Kingdom. A short essay, originally published in Transformation, contrasts judgmental appraisal methods of evaluating clergy and other church leaders with analytical methods that not only improve performance but raise morale, trust, and strengthen relationships. $2.50
Transforming Leadership: From Competition to Koinonia. A short essay, originally published in Transformation, explores four "systems" of leadership behavior which enable congregations to learn and experience the practice of koinonia. $2.50
Ministry Planning and Review System (MP&R)
The Ministry Planning and Review System (MP&R) provides a way to improve both performance and the quality of relationships within a church body. The MP&R System is in use in more than 80 countries.
MP&R for Heads and Members of Staffs. Specific guidance is provided for launching the MP&R System, building the performance plans to be used as criteria for evaluation, and conducting the entire process. Team members learn how to use supportive analytical rather than judgmental appraisal methods.

MP&R for Clergy and Clergy-Parish Relations Committees. Clergy learn how to do the initial work framing the planning and evaluation process. Committee members learn how to work collaboratively with the clergy to analyze and improve performance by both clergy and congregation.

Focusing Our Shared Ministry. This booklet accompanies both of the above manuals and helps persons learn to consider and select the key areas in which results must be produced if their team or their congregation is to be both faithful to its calling and effective in carrying it out.

MP&R Video. This video features several pastors and members of church pastor-parish relations committees from a number of Christian traditions as they describe their experience with the MP&R System. Dr. Paul Dietterich provides a theological rationale for the MP&R System.
